  • I like when a game compresses a genre down into its most pure elements. You can explore what that the genre actually is because you're able to stand behind the clockface. It is amazing how everything is represented as cards. Building, gathering resources, researching technologies, trade and sort of combat. You grapple with the same sort of problems as you would in Starcraft or AoE but instead of the main source of tension being competition with another player, your main enemy is the inherent chaos of resource management. When you start adding features to optimize the resource management process you're really just playing a game of aesthetics. "Select all idle villages", or control groups, or building queues are just ways of raising the ceiling of complexity you can manage, but like Newton's 3rd law, the game will always meet the new level of power you have, it has to, otherwise it would be too easy, so these optimisations are just there to let you see more units on the screen, it is aesthetic. A pet peeve I have with AoE 2 is that there are numerous pointless meta games before you start to play the actual game, the most frustrating of which is the initial ceremonial sheep collection -> boar collection, house building dance. If you do it in just the right way you edge out your opponent ever so slightly either in terms of resource gathering efficiency, or a lead in tech upgrades. It reminds me of a ritual sacrifice to the gods, do the dance and maybe it will rain. It isn't...
