How to win a trick in Oh Hell? ›

The highest card of the following suit takes the trick. That is, unless a player plays a card from the trump suit—then, the highest card from the trump suit wins the trick.

The PLAY begins with dealer, who leads the first card. The lead may be any suit, including trump (trump does not need to be “broken”). Play follows clockwise. Each player must follow the suit led, if he can.

The normal scoring scheme is that players who achieve their bid, score 1 point for each trick taken plus 10 bonus points. Players who fail to achieve their bid, score nothing. The player with the highest score at the end of the game is the winner.

Each player must follow the suit led, if he can. If not, he may play any other card in his hand, including trump. The player who has played the highest trump card, or if no trump was played, the highest card of the suit led, wins the trick. That player then leads to the next trick.

Players are given an equal deck of bidding cards from one to fifteen. Each turn, a prize tile is randomly selected from a pool. A prize tile is worth either positive or negative points (from -5 to +10). Each player is attempting to gather the most positive points from these prizes.

Each new round the players are allocated one card less than the previous round. In the final round of the game all players are given just one card. Each player's aim is to earn as many points each round as possible, by exactly winning as many tricks each round as they have bid.

Common penalties for reneging are for the reneging player to automatically lose their bid, or for the reneger to have three tricks added to their bid as a penalty, meaning that the team may still make contract but must take three additional tricks to do so.

The differences are: Oh Hell has a 0 trick bid option which can net quite a few points. Wizard doesn't. Wizard subtracts points for an incorrect bid.

Once a judgment is made, the player has to try and win as many hands as he had judged prior to the round. A trump card is chosen prior to the game which can ace any other card. If a player achieves his goal, he gets points respective to the number of hands he won.
