Which weather radar is the most accurate? ›

The WSR-88D is one of the most powerful and advanced Weather Surveillance Doppler Radar in the world. Since first being built and tested in 1988, it has been installed and used operationally at over 160 locations across the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii.

Dual pol radar sends both horizontal and vertical pulses, providing a two dimensional view. Thus, it provides much better information about the size, shape, and estimated amount of precipitation, distinguishing between rain, snow, and hail.

Pulse-Doppler typically uses medium pulse repetition frequency (PRF) from about 3 kHz to 30 kHz. The range between transmit pulses is 5 km to 50 km. Range and velocity cannot be measured directly using medium PRF, and ambiguity resolution is required to identify true range and speed.

You may notice on hot, summer days, strange looking lines on the radar, even though there isn't any rain. These are called convective rolls, and they happen when hot air tries to rise, but something is preventing that air from continuing to rise and it sinks back down to the surface.

On a weather radar map, a tornado is usually indicated by a smaller area of red surrounded by a larger area of green. However, modern radar systems can also indicate debris balls, a sign of a tornado on the ground.

It's widely known that RADAR systems are not able to detect stationary objects, only moving ones.

Mechanical jamming devices include chaff, corner reflectors, and decoys. Chaff is made of different length metallic strips, which reflect different frequencies, to create a large area of false returns in which a real contact would be difficult to detect.

dBZ. Nondimensional "unit" of radar reflectivity which represents a logarithmic power ratio (in decibels, or dB) with respect to radar reflectivity factor, Z. The value of Z is a function of the amount of radar beam energy that is backscattered by a target and detected as a signal (or echo).

Blue and green colors represent light-to-moderate rainfall. Yellow and orange colors show moderate-to-heavy precipitation, while red is very heavy rainfall and pink and blue colors inside the red color represent hail of different sizes.

Global models with worldwide weather forecasts

These models are all generally fairly accurate in predicting large scale patterns/features, but all will become less accurate through time. The ECMWF is generally considered to be the most accurate global model, with the US's GFS slightly behind.
