Whether you make them yourself or pick them up from Costco or Sam's Club, selling snacks and drinks during your garage or yard sale can take your final total over-the-top. It doesn't have to be fancy; cookies, snack bags of chips and bottled water will sell really well.
Most garage sales are held on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, with Saturday often being the most successful sale day. However, don't forget to check the weekend forecast. You'll get more shoppers on good weather days than on bad.
Like we mentioned, you can try to sell lots of things at a garage sale, but that doesn't mean they'll actually sell. It's important to keep in mind some things are in higher demand than others. Selecting in-demand sale items like books, dishes, and tools helps you have a more successful yard sale.
Nearly new items can be priced higher, but used or worn items should be priced accordingly. Use round numbers that are easy to add up, like $1, $5, $10. This makes transactions quicker and easier for both you and the buyer. Remember, many garage sale buyers expect to haggle.
For the smaller items that won't bring in much cash, make a separate "make a deal" table with no prices. Donate the excess. Have paper shopping bags and charge $5 to fill a bag. $1 for everything else and group cheaper items into small bags for $1.
It's easy to pass up DVDs or books at $5 a pop. But if you offer them at four for $10, you're sure to catch someone's attention. Look around for ways to make a deal. If it's the end of the day and you really want to move your items, let customers fill up a bag with items at a $5 or $10 flat rate.
Consider how much cash you'll need on hand to make change for attendees and stop by the bank ahead of time. Conventional advice is to have at least $100 cash available to make change.
